Volunteering FAQs

Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions about volunteering with Southern Housing Group.

How long will I have to commit for?

You’re free to take up a volunteer placement for as long as you like.
If your circumstances change or things don’t work out, let your supervisor know.

What skills will I need?

That depends on the role you’re interested in. Many roles don’t need any particular skills, while others may require you to have specific knowledge or experience.

The information on available roles will explain the requirements of each role, and if you’d like to know more, our Volunteer Coordinator can help.

Will Southern Housing Group pay my expenses?

Yes. We’ll reimburse you for out-of-pocket costs that you incur during your voluntary work, such as transport, meals or childcare.

What can I expect once I have submitted my registration form?

Once you’ve completed your form and sent it to our Volunteer Coordinator, we’ll let you know that we’ve received it within ten working days.

Can I claim benefits while volunteering?

Yes. Benefits regulations state that you can volunteer while receiving benefits. Information about volunteering while claiming benefits can be found at nidirect.gov.uk/articles/volunteering-while-benefits.

You can also ask your supervisor for a copy of Volunteering While Getting Benefits, which is published by the Department for Work and Pensions. If you’re receiving benefits while volunteering, it’s your responsibility to let your Benefits Advisor know.

Can I volunteer if I have a disability?

Absolutely! If you tell us about any disabilities you have, we’ll work with you to make sure you find the right role for you and have the support
you need.

Can I volunteer if I’m under 18?

Yes, you can. However, your parent or guardian must provide their consent. If you’re under 16, you’ll need to be accompanied by an adult while you volunteer.
