A cooking class with a difference
We are funding an exciting new course for our customers living in the east Sussex area which is based around everyone’s favourite topic…food!
Entitled ‘Cooking on a budget’ and based at Brighton’s Community Kitchen, the course aims to support those of you living on a low income and it all gets started on 26 February on Queens Road in Brighton.
The course which lasts for five weeks will share tasty recipes and tips for keeping healthy and well fed when your time and budget are tight. You’ll be taught how to create delicious, low cost meals using regular cupboard essentials that you’d buy from the store and also how to put those leftovers to good use.
The course will also cover key cookery skills, advise on how you can eat a more balanced diet and tips to help you shop smarter. In addition, each session will include a shared lunch and provide you with a chance to socialise with other isolated participants.
Why is this course needed?
Did you know that only 29% of adults in the UK are eating the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day? Research also shows that 41% of residents live alone and loneliness has been proven to be as damaging to our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
Previous cookery courses have had positive impacts on the following areas:
· Cooking from scratch increased by 29%
· Eating takeaways decreased by 28%
· Portions of fruit and veg consumed increased by 38%
· 56% of people eat fewer unhealthy snacks/ drinks
· 67% tried new foods
· 56% feel happier
· 44% feel more connected to other people
The Community Kitchen is run by Brighton & Hove Food Partnership, a non-profit organisation that helps people learn to cook, grow food, eat a healthy diet and waste less.
The courses are set to continue until end of March.
